Week 7 Reflection

This week I will talk a little bit more about my project. I have decided to combine PowerPoint presentations with video assessing. My teacher will be teaching her students about simple, complex and compound sentence structures during the time frame that this project will be implemented. Her students will be working in pairs (most likely, that's still up in the air) and they will be creating PowerPoint slides that show two things: the first slide will be a sentence that is not grammatically correct, and the second will be a slide with the sentence completely corrected. Each correction, however, will be an individual action (i.e. a "click"). The video will be used to record the students "teaching" the rest of the class what they are doing while explaining why. Think of it as a cooking show, but instead of Paula Dean making a recipe and having food at the end, the students will be proofreading and having a corrected sentence at the end. They will do this process with all four types of sentences (we think so far) which include simple, complex, compound, and compound-complex. The students will be explaining their thought process the entire way, so Cognitivism will be utilized during this process.

The students will be the audience, similar to Paula Dean now that I think about it :), but they will also be an active part of the evaluation process. The rubric and the assessment guide is still underway, but I think that I now have a more clear idea of where we are going! I welcome ANY feedback from you guys.

The idea is that once the students fully understand

  1. Oh wow! That sounds like a pretty cool idea! I think the idea of having other students assess and evaluate the project is an interesting idea-- any idea how you'll do that? My only concern would be students being too harsh...you know how kids can be! But I think that, if the kids really understood the ideas of respect and what they're looking for, it could be a valuable experience!

    Great ideas!!

  2. This is a really great idea. I like that the students will use "clicks" in PowerPoint to show the changes being made, instead of just showing a corrected sentence on the next slide.

I also agree with Sarah - I think they can definitely learn something valuable from the evaluation process. The rubric/assessment guide will have to be very clear to help the students understand what they should be looking for while evaluating each other, as well while completing their own project.

    Good Luck!

  3. I like how they click for each individual correction AND explain their thinking process. That is so much more valuable than just the end result. Very good!

Now, you're comparing this to Paula Dean so much that you might as well incorporate food somehow! Maybe their sentences have to describe the food that they brought in??? Just a thought... haha. I'm sure it may be difficult with elementary students, but I love projects that involve food :)

  4. The analogy you made with Paula Dean (who doesn't love Paula?) helped us understand your project better. So, you might as well incorporate the analogy when explaining the project to students. Connecting a new concept to an existing knowledge helps grasp the new concept more effectively. Your project sounds so fun. I wish you were my English teacher!
